Lakes in Nainital region
The region of Nainital was once called the city of lakes or 'Chakta' as there were 60 lakes in the area.
Nainital (1938 meters) Nainital is the most important and famous lake located in the heart of city. The lake gets it name from the story related to eye of Goddess Sati, who jumped into the sacrificial fire organised by her father.
Bhimtal (1371 meters) Bhimtal is named after one of the Pandava brothers Bhim from the epic Mahabharta, it is the largest lake of the region. In size it is 1701 metres by 454 metres making it 265 metres longer than Naini Lake.
Nauchuchiatal (1220 meters) This lake has nine corners, since nine is called "Nau" in Kumaoni language, the lake is called Naukuchiatal. Naukuchiatal is at a distance of about 3 miles from Bhimtal. During the festival of Dussera the lake is full of activities.
Khurpatal (1635 meters) Khurpatal is located at a distance of 6 miles from Nainital. The lake is known for its wide variety of fishes and is a favorite spot for fishing among locals as well as travellers. The area is surrounded by lush green gardens.
Sattal (1371 meters) Satatal is situated at a distance of 14 miles from Nainital. "Sat" means seven in local Kumaoni language. Since ital consist of seven interconnecting lakes it is called Sattal. Five of these lakes are perennial - Ram Tal, Sita Tal, Lakshman Tal, Hanuman Tal and Panna or Garud Tal and the other two are seasonal - Sookha Tal and Biyun Tal. The perennial lakes are named after the main characters epic Ramayana.
Other lakes in Kumaon region
Bhaludam (1829 meters) Bhaludan is located in Ranikhet and is known for its lake and picnic spots. It is a man made lake surrounded by thick oak and pine trees. All around the lake there are great camp sites offering a beautiful view of the Himalayas.
Giri Sarovar (500 meters) Giri Sarovar is in Kashipur. 'Sarovar' is the name for a beautiful lake in Hindu Mythology. The Giri Sarovar is considered as beautiful as "Sarovar". It is situated on the Kashipur-Ramnagar road and is at distance of 1 mile from the Kashipur Bus Stand.
Parvatital(4,634 meters) Parvati Tal or Jolingkong Lake, is located in "Chotta Kailash" one of the 3 abodes of Lord Shiva. It is in the extreme north-east corner of the Kumaon Himalayas in Pithoragarh region and a special permit from the district magistrate is required to visit the place..
Anchherital(3,658 meter) Anchheri Tal is another beautiful lake situated at high ranges of Kumaon Himalayas in the Pithoragarh region.
Shyamtal (1500 meters) Shyamtal is about 132 kms from Pithoragarh and 58 kms from Champawat has ruins dating back to the days of Chand rulers and Pandavas. It is spread over an area of about one and a half square kms. The famous Swami Vivekanand Ashram is located at the confluence at the bank of this lake.
